Attendance
Our entry bell to classrooms is 7:35 and school begins at the 7:40 tardy bell. Students who arrive after 7:40, or who are not in class at 7:40, are tardy and must get a tardy slip from the office.
Food Allergies
We have many students at BCE with moderate to severe food allergies. As a result, some of our classrooms are peanut free/nut free. If your student is in class with peers who have a peanut/nut allergy, you should
have received a letter letting you know your student’s class is a peanut free/nut free classroom. Please also keep in mind that we have students who are allergic to other foods beyond nuts/peanuts. For this reason, students are not allowed to share food and birthday treats for an entire class bought by parents are not allowed. We do have
designated tables at lunch for students with nut/peanut allergies and all food offered by EISD Child Nutrition is nut free and our kitchen is nut free. Thank you in advance for helping keep our students safe.
Electronics and Toys
Many of our Blue Jays have smartphones and tablets. In some cases, parents want their children to take these devices to school so they may communicate with their children after school. Our Blue Jays may bring
their phones and tablets to school, but they must remain turned off and stored in their backpacks during the school day. This does include the morning before the 7:40 entry bell. We also ask that our Blue Jays not
bring toys or collectibles (Pokemon cards, trading cards) as they tend to get misplaced or damaged. Before school, our Blue Jays are encouraged to read a book or talk with their friends. When electronics or toys are out in the mornings, it makes our dismissals much more difficult as our students may not hear the directions given by adults. Also our students spend a good deal of time trying to find all of the items they have, put them in their backpacks, and then line up to go to class. There may be times when your child is allowed to bring a special toy or
collectible to school with special permission from their teacher. In these circumstances, these
items must remain in the child’s backpack until they get to class.
Fridays/Spirt Days
Fridays are Spirit Days at BCE. So remind your Blue Jays to wear their favorite BCE shirt tomorrow. If they don’t have a BCE spirit shirt, they can wear our school colors of Gold/Blue.
Backpacks and Daily Folders
Each day your child will be responsible for bringing things to and from school. It is essential for your child to have a backpack that he/she can open and close easily. Please label the backpack and all personal items with your child's name. Check your child's backpack EVERYDAY for his/her BEE Folder which may contain special notes and reminders.
Homework
Please read with your child for 15 minutes each night and don't forget to record this on the reading log calendar!
Birthdays
We love recognizing your child’s birthday! Due to the changing public school nutrition laws, as well as the various food allergies within our classrooms, we have decided as a first grade team that we will not share “sweet treats” to celebrate birthdays. Instead we will recognize your child’s birthday by singing to them, and with a small trinket from the teacher (such as a birthday badge or crown to wear). If you would like to bring a special lunch and treat to your child on their birthday, please do! The treat should only be for your special person. Thanks for your understanding and support! If you are having a party that does not involve the entire class, or all boys/all girls, please do not send birthday party invitations to school, but deliver them through an alternate route. This system is much more reliable and avoids hurt feelings and miscommunication.
Conferences
Our annual parent conference will be scheduled at the beginning of our 2nd quarter. The students will have early dismissal on these 3 days: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, October 25th, 26th, and 27th. MARK YOUR CALENDARS. All conferences will be scheduled for these three afternoons. You may also schedule a conference to discuss your child at anytime during the school year.
Discipline and Classroom Responsibilities
BCE Bluejays Strive to Thrive! Each letter of the word THRIVE stand for a different character trait we would like our students to embody. T=Temperantia: Use self-control. H=Humanitas: Be Kind, I=Industria: Stay on task, V=Veritas: Be honest, E=Excellentia: Do you best. We will be looking for students who display these qualities and giving recognition in numerous ways throughout the year. In first grade we will spend a lot of time discussing, role playing, modeling and practicing what appropriate behaviors look and sound like in the classroom, hallways, bathrooms, playground, cafeteria, etc. Students will learn how to be “bucket fillers vs. bucket dippers”. We’ll model our behavior from the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? which illustrates how rewarding it is to show kindness, appreciation, and love toward others. The story talks about how we all have an invisible bucket. When we are treated kindly, our bucket becomes full. When we say and do unkind things we’re bucket dippers. When you fill someone’s bucket, yours is filled as well. Students will be rewarded throughout the day for positive behaviors and actions in the classroom. When misbehavior occurs, consequences are related to the misbehavior (natural consequences). By having the consequence directly related to the act, students begin to understand cause and effect. If classroom rules are severely or persistently broken, parents will be notified by note, email or phone call. Our discipline policy has been created with the idea that our classroom is a community with the common purpose of learning, growing and developing friendships. We are on this journey together and it is important that we are kind, encouraging, respectful and supportive of one another. In addition, it is important that each child learns to develop self-management and good work habits. Our classroom is a special place where children should feel valued and free to take risks. Establishing good classroom discipline is essential to each student's success, confidence and well-being.
Student of the Week
You will have a chance to sign your student up for their week at Lemonade Social! During your student's week, they will be sharing a favorites sheet (this will be sent home for you to complete with them) and pictures with their classmates which will be displayed in the classroom during this time. They will also be allowed to sit in a special chair all week. And your student will get to bring home our special "class pet" the weekend before and share all about their adventures together with us!
LABEL, LABEL, LABEL
Label everything! Label all clothing and belongings with your child's name.
Library
Your child’s class will visit the library weekly. Children are encouraged to keep their library book in their backpack. Your child may check out a new book ONLY if she/he has returned a book.
Snacks
The children are encouraged to bring a NUTRITIOUS snack from home daily. Some suggested snacks are: vegetable sticks, fresh or dried fruit, yogurt, popcorn, yogurt pretzels, cheese and crackers, granola bars, raisins, applesauce, Veggie or Pirate Booty, etc. Please follow the request for the snack to be NUTRITIOUS so that the children are fueling themselves with food for good learning. Students are also encouraged to bring a spill-proof water bottle to keep at their desk.
Lunch
Parents and other special guests are welcome to have lunch with students whenever they choose. Always sign in at the school office, get a green tag, and then meet us at the cafeteria. When you come to lunch with your child, you can either join our class at the lunch table or your child can sit at a guest table with you in the courtyard. Students will no longer be allowed to pick a friend to join them in the courtyard this year, but feel free to join the class in the cafeteria if your child would like to sit with a friend! Whether you eat inside the cafeteria or in the outside courtyard; the children should still follow the rules and remain at the table until their lunch time is finished.
Transportation and Dismissal
Our new online system is up and running and will be used for all transportation changes as well as reporting absences now. You will no longer email me or [email protected] for your changes or absences. All teachers (including subs) will be provided the list at the end of each day and will direct students were to go. Also, for safety/security and efficiency reasons, we have made a few changes to how after school dismissal will work. Students in car pick up will be dismissed from inside of the school. "Front office pick-up" or "walkers" will be relocated to the exterior of the school at the cafeteria side entrance. Students with this dismissal preference will be lined up in the hallway and a staff member will release them individually through the door to the awaiting adult. Also, please remember that all visitors to our school will need to get (from the front office) and wear a green tag at all times while inside the school. Thank you so much for your support with helping us keep our children safe!
